Say farewell to summer

With Labor Day coming up to mark the unofficial start of fall, this weekend provides a plethora of events to end the summer with a bang, from music festivals and a Pride festival to a car and truck show, a winery party, a daylong gardening workshop and much more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have jazzy indie-folk band The Dangling Participles at East Lansing’s Ann Street Plaza and acoustic guitar duo Capo the Second at Harrison Roadhouse, both at 6; School of Rock East Lansing opening for party band Global Village at Lake Lansing Park South at 6:15; “avant-fusion” band Space Bar at UrbanBeat, rock/Americana band J.H. Patton & the Good Companions at Lansing Shuffle and singer-songwriter Matthew Shannon at Mash Bar, all at 7; singer-songwriters Chad Benson and Filomena Castricianoat the Peanut Barrel at 8; and power-rock cover band Nitro Jen at Mash Bar at 10. Saturday evening, we have rock band Sean Anthony Sullivan at Lansing Brewing Co. and jazz-fusion band Experimental Brunch at UrbanBeat, both at 7; rapper Bfb Da Packman at Grewal Hall at 224 at 8; variety cover band Geech at the Green Door at 8:30; and blues band Deacon Earl & the Congregation at Mash Bar at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m., country/rock duo Deer & Elk at the Avenue at 7:30 p.m. and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays DJ show at 9 p.m.

For even more live music, check out Lansing Flo-Fest 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Lansing Bless Fest 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Adado Riverfront Park. Flo-Fest will feature family-friendly hip-hop performances, while Bless Fest will offer a variety of genres, from rock and hip-hop to gospel and world music. Attendees of both events can also enjoy a kids’ area, a basketball three-point contest, raffles and giveaways.

Downtown Mason will also host its annual Sun-Dried Music Festival 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11:30 p.m. Saturday. For a full schedule of the multitude of local musicians and bands performing, visit the website.

Art displays on view this weekend include an exhibition by mixed-media artist Lucy Synk at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; “Extinct: An Artistic Study of Animals Loved and Lost” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; “Resonant Earth” and “Always Different, Always the Same” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; outdoor painters’ group En Plein Air Mid-Michigan’s “Alluring Nature 2024” show at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and “Eye Witness” and “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

It's the final weekend to catch “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” at Riverwalk Theatre, with performances 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Events for the kids include the last of Grand Ledge Area District Library’s weekly Messy Play Fun Days 2 to 4 p.m. Friday and a screening of “Kung Fu Panda 4” 9 p.m. Friday at Holt’s Veterans Memorial Gardens.

Grand Ledge’s St. Michael Catholic Church will hold its annual FunFest 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. Both days will offer a food and beer tent with live entertainment. Friday will also include euchre and archery tournaments, dodgeball games and trivia, while Saturday will include a bake sale, kids’ games, silent and live auctions, a cornhole tournament, volleyball, a mass and a barbecue chicken dinner.

Ingham County’s Cultural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will host its annual Unity in the Community gathering 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hawk Island Park, featuring live entertainment, a barbecue dinner and information on community organizations. The event is free for county residents.

Those in need can shop for free clothing, coats, shoes and accessories at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church’s Community Day of Care and Prayer 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The church will also provide refreshments and prayer.

Michigan Audubon will host a workshop titled “Roots & Wings: Native Plants and Feathered Friends” 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It will begin at the organization’s headquarters in Okemos with lectures on creating native habitats, native landscape design and gardening for birds, followed by a tour of the property’s gardens. After lunch, attendees will travel to Mason’s Wildtype Native Plant Nursery for a tour and plant sale.

Basketball Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson will return to Lansing for a car and truck show honoring his late father 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Union Missionary Baptist Church. The event will also feature vendors, a DJ, food trucks and a 50/50 raffle. Funds raised will benefit Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors and Santa’s First Responders.

If you didn’t get enough shopping done last weekend, Saturday offers rummage sales from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bath’s Gunnisonville United Methodist Church and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Lansing’s Edgewood United Church. Proceeds from Edgewood’s sale will benefit the Lansing Food Bank.

Burgdorf’s Winery in Haslett will celebrate its 19th anniversary with a party noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. Guests can enjoy wine samples, food trucks and live music. There will also be guided tours of the production facility at 1, 3 and 5 p.m.

St. Johns’ fourth annual Pride festival runs 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday on West Higham Street downtown, featuring music by DJ Metro Melik and jazz-fusion ensemble the Blind Venetians, a drag show, a raffle, food trucks, vendors, face painting, a bounce house, games, educational tables and health screenings.

Finally, East Lansing’s annual ExtravaGRANDza will offer a DJ, live music, inflatables, a petting zoo, succulent giveaways and more 5 to 8 p.m. Friday on Albert Avenue between Charles and Division streets. Michigan State University students can participate in the ExtravaGavenger Hunt at downtown businesses for a free T-shirt while supplies last and the chance to win several grand prizes.
