Open Call Slam
6 to 8 p.m.
MSU Broad Art Lab
565 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing
The Broad Art Lab, located across the street from the main museum, will be bustling tonight with the community’s ideas at its first “Open Call Slam.”
As part of its Community Open Call program, the Art Lab is looking for community members to present new ideas about performance, events and creative scholarly research to showcase its space.
“The Community Open Call exemplifies engagement by challenging traditional notions of the
relationship between a museum and its community,” said Michelle Word, director of education at the Broad Museum.
“It transforms engagement into an active partnership, giving agency to the audience and fostering a community of participants who co-create museum programming,” she said.
The slam event is open to the public and anyone who has an idea for the Art Lab space. The event will see guided conversations where groups of people can network about their ideas.
“A lot of people want to work with the museum, so this creates a structure to do it,” said Madeline Rosemurgy, interim director of public relations and marketing. “Art Lab is open-ended and experimental as a community driven space.”
Ideas don’t need to be fully fleshed out either, Rosemurgy said.
“We have been calling it a ‘seed of an idea.’ Come and just tell somebody. As soon as an idea is spoken out loud, it can spark something with someone else.”
Getting community consensus with an idea gives it more strength, she added.
“Everyone comes to the table with their own backgrounds and knowledge. Ideas can grow when people bring experience to the table.”
Ideas will be weighed in on by Art Lab’s community council, including arts and science professionals, as well as students.
Those who attend are encouraged to fill out an Open Call application.
Accepted on a rolling basis, selected proposals will be invited to collaborate with museum staff to design an accessibility-minded program, including scheduling, publicity, implementation and evaluation, according to a press release.
