Shows, screenings and a scavenger hunt

The last weekend of July offers a range of activities to enjoy, from new theater productions and tons of live music to an abundance of kids’ activities, a bike scavenger hunt, a fair, a comedy showcase and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have pianist and vocalist Jonathan Gerry at East Lansing’s Ann Street Plaza and folk duo The Rusty Snails at Harrison Roadhouse, both at 6; Collin & Gwen of rock band Birdie Van Ostren and oldies cover band Stone Street Revival at Lake Lansing Park South at 6:15; one-man cover band Drew Behringer at Lansing Shuffle and live-looping musician Mark Collins at Mash Bar, both at 7; folk singer-songwriter Brian Byrnes at the Peanut Barrel, Latin music group Orquesta Ritmo at UrbanBeat and hip-hop artist KRS-One with fellow emcee Ozay Moore at Grewal Hall at 224, all at 8; variety cover group The Corzo Effect at the Green Door at 9; and rock band Off the Ledge at Mash Bar at 10. Saturday afternoon, we have Michigan State University’s Celebrating the Spectrum finale concert at Cook Recital Hall at 4. In the evening, we have singer-songwriter Jacob McLeod at Lansing Brewing Co. and funk and R&B group Powerlight Band at UrbanBeat, both at 7, plus variety cover duo Shelby & Jake at Mash Bar and rock bands Flatfoot and The Yardarm at the Avenue, both at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazzshow at 6 p.m., pop-punk band Something Missing and indie-rock musician LoLo at the Avenue at 7:30 p.m. and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays DJ show at 9 p.m.

Art displays on view this weekend include an exhibit by local ink and watercolor artist Andrew Schultz at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; “Foreign Bodies” and “Always Different, Always the Same” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; “Eye Witness,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “DOOMSCROLLING” at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; “Figuring It All Out: An Artistic Study of the Human Figure” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; and "Let's Give Them Something to Talk About” at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

If you’d like to get creative yourself, the Lansing Art Gallery will host a beginners’ drawing class 10 a.m. Saturday.

The local theater schedule picks up this weekend, with “Predictor” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Williamston Theatre, All-of-Us Express Children’s Theatre’s production of “The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition” 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center and Lansing Community College’s Ten-Minute Play Festival 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday at its Outdoor Amphitheater.

Events for the kids this weekend include an owl pellet dissection workshop 10 a.m. Friday at the Playground of Dreams in Eaton Rapids; a free screening of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie” 9 p.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Gardens in Holt; a free screening of “The Little Mermaid” 9 p.m. Friday at the park behind the South Side Community Coalition; an under-the-sea-themed crafting event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Tap House Boutique in Grand Ledge; an International Tiger Day celebration 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Potter Park Zoo, featuring tiger-themed education stations and activity tables; and a Shark Day 11 am. to 1 p.m. Saturday at East Lansing Public Library, featuring shark-themed activities, demonstrations and crafts.

Mac’s Bar will host a 12-set stand-up comedy showcase 7 p.m. Friday.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan will host its annual Lansing Stroll for Epilepsy Saturday morning at Potter Park Zoo. Check-in will begin at 7:30, followed by an awards ceremony at 8:30 a.m. The 1-mile stroll will kick off after the ceremony concludes. Participants will receive complimentary same-day admittance to the zoo.

Woldumar Nature Center invites both members and non-members to enjoy nature-themed activities, guided hikes, pontoon boat rides, food, games and more at its Naturally Curious Day, running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Visit the Lansing Mall 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday for a Christmas in July craft and vendor show.

The Lansing Bike Co-op will host its monthly alley cat bike scavenger hunt 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Participants should arrive early to check in and receive their manifests.

Finally, the Fowlerville Family Fair runs 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, offering animal shows, livestock auctions, vendors, a carnival and plenty of fair food. There will be a rodeo at the grandstand at 7 p.m. each night.
