A chill and chilly fall weekend

This weekend welcomes us into November with plenty of live music, art workshops and shopping events as well as a new musical, a daylong genealogical seminar, a Día de Muertos festival and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have Frog & Koop of Frog & the Beeftones at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; Main Street Dueling Pianos at Lansing Brewing Co. and the Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet with bellydance artist Gemhara Almaz at UrbanBeat, both at 7:30; and Carl Pawluk at The Peanut Barrel and progressive funk trio Baked Shrimp with openers Jay Cotter and Birds Eye View at Mac’s Bar, both at 8. Saturday evening, we have a DJ set by DJ Whitney Who, or Whitney Spotts of Starfarm, at UrbanBeat and rock ‘n’ roll groups Second Hand Mojo and Sean Anthony Sullivan at Mac’s Bar, both at 8, as well as metal band Cavalcade’s album release show with openers Locust Point and Cult Therapy at The Avenue at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m.

Visit the Michigan State University Broad Art Museum 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for a flow-themed Family Day, where guests can “explore art materials that blend, glide and swirl.” The museum will also have activitieson Sunday for MSU’s Family Weekend, including drop-in crafts with its Student Creative Council from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a student-led museum tour at 1 p.m. While you’re at the museum, make sure to check out all the exhibitions on display, including “Shouldn’t You Be Working? 100 Years of Working from Home,” “As we dwell in the fold,” “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “Beal Botanical Garden: Celebrating 150 Years of People, Plants, and Place.”

Other art displays on view this weekend include the new Michigan Made Holiday Art Exhibition at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s Fall Member Art Show at the Neighborhood Empowerment Center, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and Chance Liscomb’s “Where ART Thou?? Playful Reflections on Religion and Scripture” at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, which is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. 

If you’d like to make some art of your own, REACH Studio Art Center is hosting a life drawing class 6 p.m. Friday, and local artist Steph Joy Hogan is teaching a mixed-media cityscape-making workshop 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lansing Art Gallery.

Kids in first through third grades can make fall-themed placemats at the Charlotte Community Library 4:15 p.m. Friday and enjoy a variety of dinosaur-themed stations, from sand excavation to arts and crafts, at the Eaton Rapids Area District Library 11 a.m. Saturday.

Peppermint Creek Theatre Co.’s production of “The Prom,” “A Tony Award-nominated musical that follows the hilarious and heartwarming journey of four Broadway stars whose glamorous careers take an unexpected turn,” debuts 7 p.m. tonight, with additional performances 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. It’s the company’s first show at its new home base, Stage One Performing Arts Center at Sycamore Creek Church’s Eastwood branch.

If you’re in the mood to dance, visit the Michigan Athletic Club for a Ballroom Dance Social 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Friday or Central United Methodist Church for Ten Pound Fiddle’s biweekly Contra and Square Dance 7 p.m. Saturday.

If you’re looking to do some early holiday gift shopping, Friends of the Haslett Library is hosting its semi-annual book sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the library, with most books priced at 50 cents or $1, and Lansing Liederkranz German Club is hosting a Holiday Bazaar, featuring handmade crafts, holiday items, a bake sale and a German luncheon, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Michigan Genealogical Council’s annual Fall Family History Seminar runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Michigan History Center, featuring presentations on a range of genealogical topics by keynote speaker Michael L. Strauss, Archives of Michigan Senior Archivist Kris Rzepczynski and Library of Michigan Reference Librarian Matt Pacer.

Finally, Lansing’s 27th Día de Muertos celebration runs 3 through 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the former Blockbuster store in the Lansing Mall, featuring opportunities to view community-made ofrendas, or offerings for the deceased, as well as Casa de Rosado Galeria and Cultural Center’s “¡Calavera!” exhibition, which has moved from the gallery into the store. There will also be sugar-skull-decorating sessions each day while supplies last as well as a few special events 5 p.m. Saturday, including dance performances by Ballet Folklorico de Mi Terra and El Grupo Fiesta and a sugar skull costume contest.
