A wide-ranging weekend of events

From a Latinx Film Festival and a local hip-hop showcase to two winter-themed parties, an evening of love-themed audio plays, a Beatles tribute show and a whole lot more, this weekend provides plenty of entertainment for all in the Lansing area.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have a duo of members from jazzy indie-folk band the Dangling Participles at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; cover band Atomic Annie at Lansing Brewing Co., hip-hop artist Aura the Brave’s album release party and local hip-hop showcase at Mac’s Bar and EDM DJs Borgore, Flats Stanlie and SIMIO at Grewal Hall at 224, all at 7; Beatles cover group Classical Mystery Tour accompanied by the Lansing Symphony Orchestra at the Wharton Center and Celtic music group RUNA at East Lansing’s University United Methodist Church, both at 7:30; folk band Acoustic Liberty at the Peanut Barrel at 8; funk band Grady Hall & the Disciples of Funk at the Green Door at 8:30; and cover band The Reason You Came at East Lansing’s Mash Bar at 10. Saturday evening, we have indie band Four More Shapes and alt-rock band Bicycle Thief at UrbanBeat at 7; the bimonthly A Night at the Soul Lounge at the Avenue and Phish tribute group The Kids Under the Carpet with progressive-rock musician Jay Cotter at Mac’s Bar, both at 8; and cover band Collateral Damage at the Green Door at 8:30. Additionally, the Lansing Community College Jazz Band will be accompanied by professional dance company Velocity at its shows 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at LCC’s Dart Auditorium. Ending the weekend on Sunday is jazz vocalist Twyla Birdsong and accordionist Andy Callis at UrbanBeat at 5 p.m., Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m. and indie-pop band sister/sibling with indie-folk band worm at the Avenue at 7 p.m.

Maeve Bassett, an applied ethnobotanist and education program director of Michigan State University’s Beal Botanical Garden, will lead a tour of MSU’s Broad Art Museum 1 p.m. Sunday. The event is part of a series of tours co-hosted by the Broad and the botanical garden “where art and plants intertwine in a conversation about the extraordinary ways our natural world has influenced art and human societies throughout history.” While you’re at the museum, make sure to check out all the exhibitions on display, including “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” “DOOMSCROLLING,” the 2024 Art, Art History, and Design Faculty Triennial and “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights,” which closes Sunday.

Other art displays on view include “Sam x Elijah: Making Space x Taking Space” at the MSU Residential College in the Arts and Humanities’ LookOut! Gallery, which is open noon to 3 p.m. Friday; “Space Between,”by Gerald Collins, at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; “Layers,” by Robert Park, at Struk Studio in north Lansing, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday; “Realm of Daydreams - The Wonders of Fantasy Art” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; the MSU Federal Credit Union Student Art Exhibit at the credit union’s Headquarters Building 2, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; local artist Cindy Mielock’s mixed-media art display at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; and the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s “Love Is in the Air” exhibit at Bestsellers Books & Coffee Co. in Mason, which is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The MSU Department of Theatre wraps up its production of “Stevie and the Real World” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Fairchild Theatre. Additionally, “Maytag Virgin” continues 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Williamston Theatre, where patrons can also view an exhibition by local art collective Art/5; Audio Air Force presents several love-themed audio plays written by members 7 p.m. Saturday at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center; and Riverwalk Theatre begins its two-weekend run of “The Exonerated” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, with a post-show discussion following the performance on Saturday.

Events for the kids include Impression 5’s weekly Sparking Science program 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, which will focus on making colorful art; Charlotte Community Library’s “Minecraft” Club 2:30 p.m. Friday; a daylong science camp 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at tinkrLAB in East Lansing; the third session of Jeff the Magician’s four-week magic class 10 a.m. Saturday at TinkrLAB; a metal etching and stamping workshop 10 a.m. Saturday at Impression 5; and a donuts and story time program 11 a.m. Saturday at the Eaton Rapids Area District Library.

All Saints Episcopal Church will hold its monthly Coffeehouse at All Saints 7:30 p.m. Friday, featuring musical and spoken-word performances by several local artists. Guests are encouraged to bring a snack or drink to share.

The Ten Pound Fiddle will host its biweekly Contra & Square Dance 7 p.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church, with an optional dance lesson at 6:30 p.m.

In this week’s Travelogue, 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Community Center, Kay Meints will uncover all the natural wonders Iceland has to offer.

The Meridian Township Farmers Market’s biweekly winter market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the JCPenney wing of the Meridian Mall. Vendors will be selling produce, baked goods, body products, crafts, prepared food and much more.

The Hunter Park GardenHouse will host a transplant propagation class 10 a.m. Saturday. Attendees should bring gardening gloves and be prepared to get messy.

Friendship Baptist Church’s “Singing God’s Praises Through the Ages: The History of African American Gospel” event, beginning 2 p.m. Saturday, will feature performances by the University of Olivet Gospel Choir and members of the Greater Lansing community, who will kick things off with recitations, dances and musical performances.

Visit Lansing Shuffle 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday for the Winterfest Riverfront Party, featuring live music, a curling court, games, drink specials and more.

Another winter-themed party, Meridian Township’s Winter Bash, runs 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, offering free ice skating, competitions with prizes, music and hot chocolate. Attendees can bring their own skates or borrow a pair for free.

Finally, MSU’s Latinx Film Festival runs Friday through Sunday, offering screenings of a host of independent films from Latin America, Spain and the United States as well as a one-man theatrical performance focusing on gun violence, a salsa dance party with Salsa Verde at UrbanBeat and much more.
