An exciting weekend for theater buffs

This weekend, Greater Lansing has several theater productions in store as well as arts-and-crafts workshops, a spooky celebration at REO Town Marketplace and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have Shawn Maxwell at UrbanBeat, The Regal Beagel at Eaton Rapids Craft Co. and Great Scott! at Lansing Brewing Co., all at 7; Montana of 300 at Mac’s Bar and Michigan State University’s Wind Symphony and Symphony Band at the Wharton Center, both at 8; Frog & the Beeftones at The Green Door at 8:30; and Cloudhoppers at The Exchange and A Night at the Soul Lounge with Ozay Moore, DJ Kaely Kellz and more at The Avenue, both at 9. Saturday evening, we have Deacon Earl at Eaton Rapids Craft Co., LIT UP at Williamston Roadhouse and Jacque Baldori and the Dave Menzo Band at UrbanBeat, all at 7; Loa, Repeat and Tombstunner at Mac’s Bar at 8; The Corzo Effect at The Green Door at 8:30; and Tony Thompson & Friends at The Exchange and Jeremy Porter and The Tucos, The Wild Honey Collective and Bottlecap Mountain at The Avenue, both at 9. Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday evening is Pure Winds at UrbanBeat at 5 and Flummox, Anvil Crawler and No Skull at Mac’s Bar at 8.

MSU’s Broad Art Museum is holding an opening reception for its Master of Fine Arts Exhibition at 6 p.m. Friday, celebrating the graduate students’ creative and scholarly research on display. It will also host a museum tour centered around the exhibition 1 p.m. Sunday. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, so make sure to check out “Blind Spot,” “DIEGEST” and “The Nightly News” while you’re there. Additionally, view the Art Scholarship Alert exhibition at the Lansing Art Gallery 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; art from the Lansing Women’s Artist Collective at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday;  “Reflections in Watercolor,” by East Lansing artist Sarah Eubanks, at the Hannah Community Center’s Public Art Gallery 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday; and “Fringes,” by students from Donley Elementary School in East Lansing, at Impression 5 Science Center 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

The Audio Air Force, an audio theater organization, will present six original scripts written by members at its “Acts of Love” show, 7 p.m. Friday at the Hannah Community Center. Additionally, MSU Opera Theatre will perform “Falstaff,” by Giuseppe Verdi, 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Fairchild Theatre; the MSU Department of Theatre will perform “Sweat,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama,  8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Studio 60 Theatre; Ixion Theatre Ensemble will perform the action-packed “Begets: Fall of a High School Ronin” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at a building at 908 B W. Jefferson St. in Grand Ledge; and the Williamston Theatre will hold preview performances of “Mrs. Harrison,”about two women who find themselves trapped together after a storm interrupts their 10-year college reunion, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Feeling crafty? Mixed-media artist Steph Joy Hogan will lead a multimedia visual storytelling workshop at the Lansing Art Gallery 10 a.m. Saturday, teaching attendees how to create engaging stories with cut and torn paper. For kids and teens, Charlotte Community Library’s Craft Club offers a chance to create extreme dot-to-dots 4 p.m. Friday.

For those ages 7 to 17 looking for a bit more action, Lansing Junior Roller Derby will kick off an eight-week basic skills boot camp 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at East Lansing’s Court One Training Center. No skating ability is required, and loaner equipment is available, but attendees should bring a mouthguard.

If you prefer to watch the action from the audience, Capital Pro Wrestling will hold a series of matches at The Fledge starting at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Finally, the 2nd annual Haunting in REO Town, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at REO Town Marketplace, will feature meet and greets with investigators from Ghost Contact Paranormal Investigations and actors from Awaken Haunted Attraction, tarot and oracle readings, bone throwers, photo opportunities, giveaways, special promotions from local retailers and a chance for two attendees to participate in an investigation with Ghost Contact Paranormal.
