Chainsaw Art in the Park

Posted

In 2009, after trees at Williamston’s McCormick Park were devastated by the invasive emerald ash borer, the city set out to transform those decaying trees into sculptures crafted with chainsaws. However, the sculptures have worn out over time, prompting the city and the Friends of Williamston Parks to host an event where local artists will bring new life to the artworks.

Artists will be out carving trees at the park 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday (Oct. 11) and Saturday (Oct. 12) and 9 to 10 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 13). Friday and Saturday will also feature art vendors, attractions for kids, food trucks and a beverage tent with offerings from Williamston’s Old Nation Brewing Co. and Burgdorf’s Winery.

Veteran chainsaw artist Tim Klock will host a special carving presentation 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a performance from country musician Jessey Adams. On Saturday, chainsaw artists will host a live “quick carving” event at noon, after which they’ll auction off their pieces. Acoustic folk, soul and reggae musician Intellectual Jive is slated to perform at 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by cover group Black Barn Band at 7 p.m.

After the live carving finishes on Sunday, guests are invited to vote for their favorite piece. The festival will end with an awards ceremony for the winning artists around noon.

The festival is free to attend, but proceeds from the beverage tent, the quick carving auction and event T-shirt sales will benefit Williamston’s parks. For more information, visit williamstonparks.com/aboutcaitp.
