The Michigan State University jazz orchestras will kick off their seasons with a special performance featuring jazz trombonist, composer and bandleader Ryan Keberle 3 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 13) at the school’s Fairchild Theatre. Keberle is the first guest of MSU Jazz Studies’ 2024-‘25 Jazz Artist in Residence program, a series that highlights both emerging talents and legendary figures in jazz. The guest artists tour with MSU musicians to mentor youth musicians across the state throughout their weeklong residencies, culminating in a performance at MSU.

Keberle’s extensive musical career has included collaborations with greats such as Maria Schneider, David Bowie and Wynton Marsalis. As the leader of the indie jazz ensemble Catharsis, he’s gained widespread recognition for his lyrical melodies and intricate improvisations.

“Ryan's grasp of jazz and his ability to blend different genres truly showcases his versatility and creativity," MSU trombone Professor Michael Dease said. "Learning from him will provide our students with valuable insights into the jazz tradition, while our dedicated jazz patrons will have the chance to experience his incredible talents.”

Tickets for Sunday’s concert are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors ages 60 and older and $7 for students and attendees under 18. They can be purchased online at music.msu.edu, by calling (517) 353-5340 or at the door.
