Laughter is the best medicine

If the winter weather has you feeling down, don’t fret — the Lansing area brings the laughs this weekend with two comedy shows, plus a euchre tournament, a used book sale, two theater productions, a gardening class and plenty of live music.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have country and rock cover musician Carl Pawluk at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; cover band Time2Play at UrbanBeat at 7; cover band Atomic Annie at the Green Door at 8:30; and blues, country and jazz group the Further Adventures of FatBoy and JiveTurkey at Mash Bar in East Lansing at 10. Saturday evening, we have Latin music group Orquesta Ritmo at UrbanBeat and punk band the Cult of SpaceSkull with rock band Mickey Shorr & the RadioShacks and indie band Four More Shapes at Mac’s Bar, both at 8, and soul, R&B and jazz cover band SoulPlay 517 at the Green Door at 8:30. Additionally, Q106 will host rounds four and five of its  “Homegrown Throwdown” battle of the bands contest 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Grewal Hall at 224. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m. and ‘60s girl-group tribute band the Plurettes with School of Rock East Lansing’s Adult Band at the Avenue at 7 p.m.

It’s the last weekend to view “Colors of Celebration: An Artistic Tribute to Global Holidays” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Other art displays on view this weekend include “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights” and the 2024 Art, Art History and Design Faculty Triennial at the Michigan State University Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 am. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; “Space Between,” by Gerald Collins, at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Jules Vander Galien’s pastel landscape art at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday; and “Layers,” by Robert Park, at Struk Studio in north Lansing, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Evolve Theatrics wraps up its production of “Chicago” this weekend at the First Christian Church of Lansing, with final performances 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Additionally, a new Lansing theater group, Alive Theatre, presents its first show, “These Shining Lives,” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Bible Church in west Lansing.

AL!VE, a health park in Charlotte, will host its weekly story time and parkour workshop 10 a.m. Friday for children ages 2 to 6 and their caregivers. Also at 10 a.m. Friday, REACH Studio Art Center continues its four-week Storytime for Tots class.

Hooked bookstore is hosting a euchre tournament 7 p.m. Friday, with a crash course for beginners at 6:30 p.m.

A Lot More Fun Comedy Club, located within Christ Community Church, will welcome Detroit comedian Andy Beningo and Lansing comedian Tim Palmer for a family-friendly comedy show 7 p.m. Friday.

DeWitt’s Looking Glass Brewing Co. will also host a comedy show 8:30 p.m. Saturday, featuring performances by Michigan comedians Wesley Ward, Blain Hill and Will Green.

The 2024 Travelogue series continues 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Community Center. This week, Ian Broughton will take guests on a journey through Southeast Asia and share some of his best travel advice.

For those looking to make their thumbs a bit greener, Hunter Park GardenHouse will host a class on the basics of building and maintaining healthy soils 10 a.m. Saturday.

Finally, visit the Unitarian Universalist Church 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for a used book sale, featuring thousands of books at bargain prices.
