Small businesses are vital to local economy

Posted

Imagine how empty Downtown or Old Town or REO Town might be without small business. If that doesn’t scare you, imagine if the economic contributions of those businesses went elsewhere.

Every dollar spent at a small business is a reinvestment in your local economy through tax contributions, employment and occupied space. A study by Local First on Grand Rapids small businesses found a slight 10 percent increase away from big box stores would result in 1,600 new jobs, $53 million in wages, and a $137 million positive economic impact to the area.

Don’t believe us yet? Michigan Retailers Association’s Buy Nearby program conducted a study that showed if you converted just 1 in 10 out-of-state purchases to Michigan stores, Michigan would see a $1.2 billion boost to the state economy. As a consumer, shopping local small businesses is a statement in the modern days of big box stores and online shopping. It says that you care about your community and believe in it. Keep your money in the Mitten! For more information on the Buy Nearby program, visit FB.com/BuyNearbyMI.
